Estate Cleanout Checklist for Rock County Families

Updated

Short answer

Work in this order: secure papers and valuables, let family choose, donate, pull out the items with disposal rules (appliances, electronics, tires, chemicals), then haul the rest. A typical estate cleanout costs $625 to $2,000, up to $4,000 for large estates (LawnStarter).

1. Before anything leaves

  • Find and secure papers: wills, titles, tax records, bank statements, photos.
  • Walk the house with family and tag what each person wants.

2. Donate

Goodwill, 2003 Holiday Dr, Janesville. There is no Habitat ReStore in Rock County (details).

3. Pull out the items with rules

  • Refrigerators and freezers: NR 488 refrigerant recovery; $15 at the Janesville landfill.
  • TVs and computers: recycler only.
  • Tires: landfill tire drop-off or a hauler.
  • Paint, solvents, pesticides: Rock County Clean Sweep by registration, 608-757-5588.
  • Car batteries: banned from landfills; Edgerton's City Garage takes them on posted dates.

4. Haul the rest

Priced by volume. A house that one person lived in for 30 or more years often fills more than one truck. In Rock County, 11.9% of households moved into their home in 1989 or earlier, per the Census (ACS 2020-2024); in some towns it is closer to one in four. Each town page lists its own share.

Quick answers

How long does an estate cleanout take?

It depends on the size of the house and how much sorting the family wants done before loading starts. Photos of every room let a crew estimate the volume and the number of trips up front.

Rather not haul it yourself?

Tell us what needs to go and where. A local crew sorts the recycling, donation and landfill streams for you and replies with a price first.
