Short answer

What a crew takes
Sofas and sleepers, sectionals, recliners, mattresses and box springs, dressers, entertainment centers, dining sets, desks, bookcases, bed frames, cribs, patio furniture and office chairs. A crew carries it out of the room, so stairs and tight doorways are their problem, not yours. Point at it and it goes.
What the city and towns charge instead
Rock County has no single rule for bulky furniture. Each municipality sets its own, and the gap between them is large:
- City of Janesville: no curbside bulk program. You load it and drive it to the Sanitary Landfill on Black Bridge Rd, where a passenger vehicle pays $12 and a truck or trailer pays $46 per ton with a $20 minimum (city landfill page).
- City of Beloit: $20 per bulky item and $30 for a sofa or sleeper, prepaid and scheduled through public works. Set it out before noon the day before and the city can add a $125 early-collection fee (Beloit bulky item page).
- Town of Beloit: $10 per item dropped at the Beloit Recycling Center on Saturday mornings (town bulky items page).
- Town of Union: a couch is $25, a sectional $50, a recliner $12 and a table $8 at the town drop-off center, by appointment (Town of Union fee sheet).
- City of Milton: one bulk pickup a month through Johns Disposal at no extra charge, booked by phone (Milton refuse page).
Orfordville and the Town of Janesville have monthly bulk pickups too, but both cap each item at 50 pounds and something one person can lift, which leaves out most full-size sofas and solid-wood dressers. Every municipality's rule is on its own page in the service area.
Donate it first if it is in good shape
Goodwill's Janesville store and donation center is at 2003 Holiday Dr. Whether it takes large furniture was not something we could confirm on Goodwill's own site, so call ahead. There is no Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Rock County; the nearest one for this Habitat affiliate is in Waukesha. More in where to donate furniture in Rock County.
How the price is set
One piece is usually priced as a single item. Several pieces are priced by how much of the truck they fill, and a living room set plus boxes often lands at a quarter or half load. The full load table is on the pricing page.
